What are the little black spots left behind by flies?

Just encountered this nasty looking fly for the first time. It's the Xenox tigrinus, tiger bee fly. So named because it feeds on carpenter bees (which tunnel into wood) and most likely means you should check the wood around where they are being spotted. I know I will be doing some extermination, plugging and painting.
