Th battey on these suck! It is located underneathe the bike in the center. There is 1 bolt on each side you need to take off. Then while holding the cover whicj is on a hinge, open it slowly and the battery should come straight down. ( Hint,,, I pull my back tire on a 2 x 6 to raise the bike up a little. ) now you can access the battery cable bolts. Take then both out being carful not to short the red/positive against anything when moving the battery around trying to get to the bolts. Assemle the same way.

Hope this helps!

OPEN THE HINGE COVER FIRST. Reach under and push up on the battery. The bolts that hold the battery in will be A LOT easier to get to. Remove negative side first (kickstand side). Put electric tape around socket so you don't have to play opperation. 10 minute job.

Thanks to the authors above. Just completed the task Sept 2010) of changing the battery on a 1998 Suzuki Intruder 800cc. Mentioned above, you need to roll the bike onto a 2 x 6 to raise it up 2" so that you can turn the wrench for the hard to get screws right inside the exhaust pipes. The 4 screws are in the front of the battery box, 2 smaller screws at the bottom that hold the hinge, and the upper larger screws that keep the box tight. First unscrew the battery cables (follow Darlena instructions above) Then loosen (not remove) the upper screws, then remove the lower screws and the hinge will fold down and the battery will come straight down. 30 minute job for me.
