What is double play on a DVD?

A Double Play DVD refers to a DVD pack that contains the film on both a DVD and a Blu Ray disc, hence the 'double'. There are also 'Triple Play' packs, which as well as the aforementioned discs, you also receive a digital copy to play on your computer etc.

Although you will be able to play the main film on a standard DVD player (as opposed to only Blu Ray) there may also be a special features disc that is only for Blu Ray. Therefore, it may be worth waiting for a DVD only edition, if you are not considering upgrading to Blu Ray any time soon.

These packs are being used, for example, for the latest Disney films such as Beauty and the Beast, and is presumably an aggressive marketing technique to encourage people to switch to Blu Ray, which is the successor to DVD.
