What is the meaning of scope in that opthalmascope?

I believe the Scope in "Opthalmoscope" means to look at for the purpose of evaluation. Since opthalmoscope is an instrument for viewing the inferior anatomy of the eye in purpose to detect and evaluate if there is an abnormality.
