How many survive the Peshtigo fire?

The Peshtigo Fire, which occurred on October 8, 1871, is considered one of the deadliest wildfires in American history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 1,500 to 2,500 people. While exact numbers of survivors are difficult to determine, it is believed that several hundred residents of Peshtigo and surrounding areas managed to escape the blaze. Many of these survivors fled to the nearby Peshtigo River, where some sought refuge in the water. The fire's rapid spread and intensity left little time for evacuation, contributing to the high fatality rate.
