What is the effect of salt water to plants that is not in the soil?

Salt water can have detrimental effects on plants, primarily through a process known as osmosis. When plants absorb salt water, the high salinity can lead to dehydration, as water is drawn out of the plant cells to balance the concentration of salts outside. This can cause symptoms such as wilting, stunted growth, and ultimately, plant death if the salinity is too high.
