Why is it irony of Mr.Gatz's comment about James J. Hill?

This allusion is some what ironic, although Gatsby was a self-made man, he used his wealth to attempt to win Daisy back, not to do great things for the country. It is obvious that Gatz has a much different view of his son's importance than Carraway or possibly even the rest of society.
