Brachiopods are ancient marine organisms that first appeared over 500 million years ago, during the Cambrian period. They thrived throughout the Paleozoic era and were particularly abundant during the Ordovician and Devonian periods. While their diversity has declined, brachiopods still exist today, with around 300 living species. This makes them one of the oldest groups of animals still in existence.
