Why did Helen Waterford give up her daughter?

Helen Waterford gave up her daughter in an attempt to save her life during the Holocaust. She hoped that by leaving her with a non-Jewish family, her daughter would have a better chance of survival. Tragically, Helen was later separated from her daughter and they did not reunite until after the war.
