Bloat in fish is usually caused by very poor water conditions (as are most fish diseases and problems). For the fish to get better, its conditions must be improved. I would advise you to make sure the fish is in acceptable conditions by observing the following. 1 inch of fish needs 1 gallon of water. A male Betta has about a 2 inch body length so he requires at least 2 gallons of properly filtered, heated (to 78F) water. A regular weekly water change of 50% is also recommended. Because fish tanks are never filled to the brim that means you would need to have a tank with a nominal capacity of at least 3 gallons. People who say that Bettas can be happy in a jam jar are talking rubbish and do not have the welfare/health of the fish at heart.
