The first known audio recording was made by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville in 1860 using a device called the phonautograph. This recording captured sound waves as visual tracings on a soot-coated cylinder but was not playable back at the time. The first audio playback device was invented later by Thomas Edison in 1877 with the phonograph, allowing recorded sound to be listened to.
