As the Sun exhausts its hydrogen fuel in about 5 billion years, it will enter the red giant phase, expanding and engulfing the inner planets, possibly including Earth. Once it sheds its outer layers, it will leave behind a hot core known as a white dwarf. Over time, this white dwarf will cool and fade, ultimately becoming a cold, dark stellar remnant known as a black dwarf, although this stage takes longer than the current age of the universe to reach.
