In order to become a qualified bridge inspector, one must have a Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural engineering, and a Professional Engineering license. This requires that one work as an engineer under a licensed engineer for a period of time, and take a state examination. One also has to take a two week Bridge Inspection course, with periodic refresher courses. All this is so that the inspector knows what to look for while inspecting a bridge. That being said: I pull down about $65k. I have over 30 years experience in structural engineering, and inspection is not my full-time occupation.
