What does panamax and post panamax mean?

Panamax refers to the maximum dimensions of a ship that can pass through the original Panama Canal, which are approximately 965 feet in length and 106 feet in width. Post-Panamax ships exceed these dimensions, often requiring the larger locks of the expanded Panama Canal, completed in 2016.
