Yes, John Mccain did fire the missile i was on that boat and i had to help clean up his mess. He always was a drinker and while he was flying he had a couple and he shot the missile...
EDIT:
Do you mean to say he piloted the F-4B Phantom II Jet that fired the Zuni missile, and not one of the 2 Skyhawks that got hit by the Zuni missile? In the official accounts they now claim McCain's plane was one of the two A-4E Skyhawks.
I know for a fact that McCain normally flew F4 Phantom planes. I would assume that a pilot sticks to learning how to fly one plane really well and that McCain was an F4 Phantom pilot.
McCain was transferred from the badly damaged USS Forrestal to the USS Oriskany. Shortly afterwards, on Oct. 26, 1967, he was shot down flying an F4 Phantom and captured by the Vietnamese. Now, why would they reassign McCain to fly a different type of Jet than he did on the USS Forrestal? The answer is, they didn't. He flew his last two missions with the same fighter type he flew on the USS Forrestal.
The Navy praised his "aggressiveness and skillful airmanship" when awarding him the Navy Commendation Medal for an attack Oct. 18, 1967, on a shipyard in Haiphong, North Vietnam, prior to his capture. The Navy also commended his "superb airmanship" in awarding him the Distinguished Flying Cross for a bombing attack on a Hanoi power plant Oct. 26, 1967. His plane was hit by a surface-to-air missile on that mission, but he "continued his bomb delivery pass and released his bombs over the target" before being forced to eject, according to the official citation.
McCain flew an F4 Phantom Jet on his last two missions before he was shot down.
