How long is a check valid in US?

It's up to the bank. Legally they have to honor the check within 6 months unless otherwise indicated on the front of the check.

Etiquette dictates, for personal checks, that if it's more than a month or two old, you should contact the person who gave it to you and ask if it's okay to cash.
