How did hierogkyphics get translated?

Hieroglyphics were translated through the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799, which had the same text in three scripts: Ancient Greek, Demotic, and Hieroglyphics. Jean-Francois Champollion successfully deciphered hieroglyphics by comparing Greek names and symbols to unlock the ancient Egyptian language.
