Who was the Harlem hellfighters?

A National Guard Regiment from New York, the 15th NY, whose members called themselves "the 15th Heavy Foot". When called into Federal Service for WWI the Regiment was redesignated the 369th Infantry and assigned to the 93rd Division. The 92nd and 93rd Divisions were black troops, with white officers. Various wealthy New Yorkers took an interest in the Regiment, and subsidized its band, which was able to secure the services of some of the best professional musicians in New York with this ability to supplement Army pay. In Europe the band played numerous concerts, frequently at hospitals to entertain the wounded. No one who saw them perform ever forgot it. The bandleader was named Jim Europe. Racial prejudice kept the 93rd Division from taking a place in the line with other American units. The US sent a total of over 40 divisions to France during WWI, and about 8 of those were denied a place in combat, being required to work behind the lines in the Service of Supply as Depot Divisions, and providing men as replacements for other units in action. The French however had a different attitude, having black colonial troops of their own, such as the Senegalese. The 369th was offered to the French, who accepted promptly, and the 369th compiled an enviable combat record serving in French formations, at the front for many months.
