In the past, before grocery stores, food vendors all gathered at a marketplace. Because there was always a crowd at these places, it's where much of a city's guards or police force would be - looking to catch thieves and stop fights. Michael was already the patron saint of soldiers and policemen, so the grocers adopted him as their saint because the police protected their businesses.
