'une cuve' is a large tub or vat. It is typical for grapejuice to be let in such 'cuves' for turning into wine. 'la cuvée' is the quantity a large 'cuve' can hold and gave its name to the wine prepared at one time with the same methods (even though it might not be in the very same 'cuve').
