How do you read the trouble codes and abs codes on a 1995 camaro?

I tried doing it the passive way with one of those cheap plastic code reader things you plug in, and you're supposed to see the codes on the dash flash. It's basically a single wire that touches 2 pins. This didn't work :( It's very common for this to work on other car's though.
