Opossums mate through a process called polygynandry, where both males and females may have multiple partners. During the mating season, males will compete for females, and after a brief courtship, copulation occurs, often lasting only a few minutes. Female opossums possess a pouch where the young develop after mating, as they give birth to underdeveloped young that crawl into the pouch to continue their growth. Mating typically takes place in the spring, and females can have multiple litters each year.
