Antarctica is primarily inhabited by a variety of wildlife, including penguins, seals, and seabirds, which have adapted to its extreme conditions. There are no permanent human residents; however, seasonal research stations host scientists and support staff from various countries, who live there temporarily to conduct research. The population can fluctuate from around 1,000 in winter to about 5,000 in summer, depending on the research activities.
