Missouri has produced some fabulous minerals from underground lead-zinc mines, but these are pretty much closed at the moment. I'd suggest joining a local gem and mineral club, or consulting the local geology department at a museum or university. Or buy "The Common Rocks and Minerals of Missouri " by WD Keller.
