Cicadas typically spend several years underground as nymphs, where they can burrow as deep as 3 to 12 feet (about 1 to 4 meters) depending on the species and soil conditions. However, they usually remain closer to the surface, often within the top few feet of soil. Once they mature, they emerge to molt and become adults, usually in late spring or summer.
