A Navy Hospital Corpsman is and an enlisted medical technician who works in Naval Hospitals and Clinics, aboard ships, with the Marine Corps and special operations groups in a medical billet capacity but may be cross-trained with other specialties as needed or required for special ops. A hospital corpsman starts out as a "general duty" corpsman after completing his primary medical training at a Naval Hospital Corps School or a combined services medical training facility.

After the HM completes "A" school training, he may be assigned to shore or sea duty or may go on to a specialized medical school for higher levels of medical expertise.

Corpsmen who are assigned to Marine Corps, Sea-Bees or special operations completes FMF (Fleet Marine Force) training which teaches HM's combat ops and field medical techniques necessary for land based operations.

The Navy Hospital Corps is the only enlisted corps in the US. Navy and has an esprit de corps that sets it apart from its Army and Air Force counterparts. It has been in existence since 1898.
