What role did the alliance system play in Europe to World War 1?

It brought a lot of countries into conflict when normally only 2 nations were involved. When Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Austria's allies, Germany and the Ottoman Empire, and Serbia's allies, Great Britain, France, and Russia, also joined the conflict, making it a continental war.
