In the fable "Mercury and the Woodman," the dishonest woodman, who tries to deceive Mercury by claiming that his axe was lost in the river, is punished for his dishonesty. Mercury, instead of giving him back the lost axe, reveals the true axe and presents him with a golden one, but the woodman, still greedy, lies again about his axe being made of silver. As a consequence, Mercury takes away all the axes from him, leaving the dishonest woodman with nothing, illustrating the moral that dishonesty leads to one's downfall.
