What is the average life span of a vw golf engine before it's first over-haul?

I'm on the hunt for a Golf aswell, and from what i've been reading it seems to be around 200k as long as you maintain it well by getting oil changes at recomended intervals (every 6k), acting on warning lights immediately and replacing timing belt when required.
