Actually you can use the tank pump by filling the filter canister with diesel. This will allow the engine to start and idle. When idling (engine running condition) the in-tank pump comes on to continually transfer fuel from the tank to the filter. Their are five lines going into the fuel filter canister. The one in the 12 o'clock position nearest to and pointing to or from the firewall and perpendicular from the fire wall is the line from the fuel tank. The other four lines are feeds and return lines from the high pressure pump and injector manifold (both on the engine). Once you have removed the tank feed line you can extended it several feet with a tube bung and tubing. This will allow you to feed the gas/diesel mix to a fuel can. It took about 5 min to fill a 5 gal can. I also had to fill the fuel filter canister twice. I got 15 gallons out of the tank. I had the misfortune of filling 5 gallons of regular gas into an empty tank. Then I filled the remaining 10 gallons with diesel. It ran rough but I made it 20 miles home. Next day start seemed like it turned over for a long 30 seconds before running rough but I then made it 3 miles to the part store and back. Start from parts store when warm was not as long. I did not take it to dealer as I was sure the dealer would take advantage of the situation and may void my warranty. I was at 10k on a 2009 Jetta TDI. Now I am at 16.5K and my milage is up to 42mpg where as prior to putting the gas in I was at 38mpg. Mpg improvement contributed long break in for VW TDI's. Only parts replaced fuel filter, and oil change.u pretty well cant use the cars pump on diesel as the fuel pump delivers to the injectors.u can however buy a cheap electrical pump and connect that to the fuel line between the diesel pump and the tank and use that to mump out the gas. and a tip for u, a little gasoline in the diesel will not hurt the engine, it will actually clean your injectors and remove unwanted moisture as it burns with the diesel fuel in normal running of the engine.so dont even get concerned about cleaning out the tank and fuel lines
