How should police officers treat the public?

In their day to day, on-duty social interaction with the public, politely and with respect - and in carrying out their "official" contacts, and in the execution of their offical duties, politely but firmly - and if they meet force, quickly escalate their response so that THEY and not the other person has the advantage.
