When do silkie chickens start to lay eggs?

There is no breed named the Long Island chicken. The Long Island Reds is a Baseball team, and their mascot is a chicken, of sorts. There is a breed called the Rhode Island Red chicken. The hens start to lay eggs when they are 5 months or older. Of course extremes in their environment may delay egg production.
