Live was harder 100 years ago, but people were as civilized as they are now in most of the world. More people lived on farms than do today and electricity was not widely available in the country. Cars were just coming into common use. Roads were not very good as a whole. Community gatherings were the main source of entertainment. Long distance telephone service was poor and expensive so people wrote more letters. Local mail service was better in towns than it is now. Virtually every town had a railway station and they ran many trains that made many stops.
