Would someone living 200 years ago have known the word helicopter?

The Word was coined in 1861 from the French 'helicoptere' meaning a devise for making aeroplanes rise perpendicular. However the experiment failed. The Word transferred to helicopters in the modern sense when they were developed in the 1920's
