The cardinal was named Indiana's state bird in 1933 by the General Assembly. This was because it was an extremely common yet extraordinary bird seen in great abundance in those areas. The cardinal is also the state bird of Kentucky, (where it is know as the Kentucky Cardinal) Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia.
