A crack is someone highly trained and potent. A fray is a contest or combat or even melee . The line is taken from the poem The Man From Snowy River and the poet is talking about all the experts from far and wide who have come to join in and attempt to catch a valuable colt that has escaped and joined wild horses. warm regards David
