Basically, you ensure the vehicle is in neutral... if you can't do this, then you find a way to make sure it's not going to go anywhere... set the parking brake, chock the wheels, maybe prop something to actuate the foot brake... then you turn the wheels completely to the left. Once you do that, you have to jump the starter... this is often done with a screwdriver. There's a large stud with wires attached to it at the back of the solenoid. With the key in the "on" position, you establish a contact between that and the smallest stud at the back of the starter. If you haven't immobilized that vehice and ensure it won't roll forward on you, this is a very dangerous situation to be in, and could result in you being injured or killed (and such things have happened... a woman doing this with her Dodge pickup had it roll forward on her and pin her underneath in the parking lot of a restaurant here in Colorado Springs in August of 2011, and it ended up killing her).
