Norco is considered a stronger drug because it contains a powerful pain killer. Norco is typically used to treat moderate to severe pain. Most of Norco's pain killing ability comes from the hydrocodone, a semi-synthetic opioid. Tramadol is often described as as pseudo-opiate because it does not act like traditional opiates. It has very mild affinity for opioid receptors, most of the opiate activity comes from an active metabolite. However, Tramadol has unique anti-inflammatory properties and antidepressant properties both of which reduce pain. It is theorised that the combination (synergism) of the three actions Tramadol has allows it to be an effective pain killer for mild pain. Tramadol is also known to be particularly effective in treating neuropathic pain, a type of nerve pain that is more difficult to treat with standard opiates like Norco.
