Laura's Ma was Caroline Quiner Ingalls. Her natural father died in a shipwreck at the Straits of Mackinac, Michigan. Her mother remarried a man named Frederick Holbrook, who Caroline thought was a wonderful stepfather. But she retained her maiden name "Quiner" until her marriage.
