Nearly always disastrously - a way of life that is a bad mixture of boredom and danger, unhealthy anyway, making her cynical and mistrusting, and enslaved by unscrupulous and often violent pimps.

There is a 'top layer' of the industry, where the woman calls the shots, and according to Sydney Biddle Barrows of 'Mayflower Madam' fame, there are women teachers, lawyers, accoutnants and managers everywhere who discreetly top-up their income in this way, while continuing good relationships with husbands or boyfriends - who are nearly always kept in ignorance of the situation.

My guess is that these ones are lucky if they don't slip downwards before long and end up on the street.
