There were a great many genres including novels, short stories, works of social commentary, satires, biographies and autobiographies, and histories. Novels and histories by well-known authors such as H. G. Wells and Jules Verne were very popular, and previously unpublished works by Charles Darwin were being published posthumously in the early 1900's.
