In a food web, energy flows from producers, such as plants, to consumers, including herbivores and carnivores, through various trophic levels, with energy loss at each stage primarily due to metabolic processes. Matter, in the form of nutrients, cycles through these organisms as they consume and decompose, returning to the soil and atmosphere. In the carbon cycle, carbon is absorbed by plants during photosynthesis, transferred through the food web as organisms consume one another, and released back into the atmosphere through respiration, decomposition, and combustion. This interconnected movement of energy and matter sustains ecosystems and maintains ecological balance.
