Since diamonds are so valuable relative to their small size, it is imperative that loose, unset diamonds not be 'lost', which is easy with small objects.

The paper used is folded into an envelope shape, which also provides a location for notations about the diamond. The envelope is small, usually not much larger than the palm of an adult's hand.
