Yes, the bands were a big part of regimental life.
After the Battle of Fredericksburg, when it was too cold to fight, the two armies were camped on either side of the Rappahannock river, and the Union bandmaster decided to rehearse the band - in full hearing of the Confederates.
It was in the defiant Confederate character to sing along with these tunes, even though they were enemy's. Eventually they were cheeky enough to shout requests for their own songs like 'I wish I were in Dixie'. Incredibly the Union band agreed to play some of them.
Finally, the bandmaster decided that enough was enough, and said they would finish with 'Home Sweet Home'. On both sides, the soldiers suddenly choked up with emotion and couldn't sing a Word. They were thinking of the grim combat to come.
