The salamander can be called dead or dying in the two ways i do know about.

1.The creature does not move for two or three days.If its under neck and belly area is not exhaling or inhaling,or you need to look very carefully and and look and see if its under neck and belly are transparent.BE VERY CAREFUL!flip it on its back slowly and look at the transparent neck area.If you look very carefully you shall see a white V-shape in its neck.this is the airway were air moves in and out of the lungs.look closely and you will see the V opening and closing.if it is opening and closing at any rate of speed....CONGRATULATIONS!!it is alive it is not ,press on the belly from the sides then the bottom and wait a minute or two .if it is begining to move inward and outward. you may have saved its life but after keep a close eye on it.check twice a day and if it stops breathing more than five times a week it may be dying or hybernateing or dying or if it has a good long amount of time between it happening...it is very likely it is sleeping or hybernateing.if the V wont have a responce. i am very sorry but your friend is gone.

2.if you think is perfectly normal and you don't care to check it ,if it stops moving and after two days its eyes disappear and it looks like it is shrivel to a crisp... it is dead.

TIP! make sure you were plastic or leather gloves when checking it.

FACT!! ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR GLOVES ON!!! the oil from human skin can be very deadly to it and donut squeeze it to hard or play with it if its a small or medium size. fingers can really injure ir break its bones.

hope you found the advice very usefull and sorry about the spelling.i am EXTREMELY sure these facts are true.and if it has lost a tail it can easly get infected and kill it.trust me i know this because i recently lost a good and very young friend recently and i am haveing the same situation with my small young adult salamander "Lil red".it is 95% percent chance he is just hbernateing and shall live.my last salamander that lost its life last week with a lost tale and a pen wound at the tail and DO NOT use tap water to spray of feed them. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING AND TAKEING MY ADVICE!!!!!!!!
