Porpoises breathe through nostrils, not gills. As marine mammals, they have lungs and surface to inhale air through a blowhole located on the top of their heads. This adaptation allows them to breathe efficiently while swimming. Unlike fish, which use gills to extract oxygen from water, porpoises rely on air from the atmosphere.
