What does ect mean on a 1996 Hyundai Elantra?

I think the question might refer to the switch near the transmission gear selector. If so, it stands for Electronically Controlled Transmission. Basically it just gives you some more power. I believe that it delays the shifts until a higher RPM is reached. Of course this only relates to an automatic transmission, and it will probably decrease your miles per gallon.
