Fox cubs typically begin to venture out of their den and explore their surroundings at around 4 to 5 weeks of age. They start to eat solid food around this time but are still dependent on their parents for nourishment and protection. By about 8 to 10 weeks, they become more independent and can hunt small prey, though they may still rely on their parents for food and guidance until they are around 6 months old. Full independence is usually achieved by the time they are around 6 months to a year old.
