Tango dance (TD) was created slowly after the multicultural meeting of hundreds of thousands immigrants from various European countries (mostly), which occurred in the Rio de la Plataarea (Uruguay and Argentina). Due to its social origins from ballroom dances, and others, TD became clearly a social dance.
The most popular representation of this dance is a couple of a man and a woman dancing with a tight embrace. TD is a powerful dance, earthy, and dramatic. It could be described as stylized walking. The walk has a "stalking" nature with dramatic gestures. Steps are based heavily on improvisation (except in performance level). Movements are sometimes slow and slithery, sometimes abrupt with quick foot flicks and head turns.
Historians and the people deeply involved with tango culture always referred to this dance as Tango Rioplatense.
