What would cause a car to turn off suddenly when driving?

Depends very much on WHICH car - YOU didn't say !

Typical things would include fault in ECM, distributor shaft broken, engine seizure, gas pump failure, etc. -Much of this depends on diagnosis of exactly how/when it happened. -Give more information and you will get a better answer.
